Asoka was not interested in the religious aspects–doctrines and rituals–of Buddhism. He did not talk about the four noble truths, the eight-fold path, the non-self, or emptiness. He focused on inner growth, and on simple moral rules: speak truth, tolerate other religions, compassion for all beings. He passed laws to stop indiscriminate animal killings or killing for religious sacrifices. He promoted vegetarianism. He promoted equality of all human beings.
